Virtualization of server hardware based on the KVM hypervisor

Leading Technology Company is actively using different virtualization software. Virtualization-based KVM is free and publicly available, while working is much faster than virtualization products on the basis of VMWare. It has a graphical user interface based on a web server, which is installed separately.

Used packages:

  • KVM - virtualization environment includes kernel modules
  • QEMU - the emulator virtual hardware
  • libvirt - the virtualization environment management library
  • bridge-utils - the virtual network switch
  • MDAMN - environment for the creation and processing of RAID

Managing Virtual Machines: Control is possible from the graphical environment with the help of the program: Virtual Machine Manager (note: only designed for medium Linux) or by using the command utilities on the server. Other controls in the project have not been incorporated by the customer.

Virtual Machines:

It creates a single virtual machine named: win2k3. Resources used by the machine:

  • Processor - 4 (all available on the server)
  • Memory - 4GB (half available on the server)
  • Disk Space - 300GB (70% available on the server)
  • The image of the hard disk is - /var/lib/libvirt/images/w2k3.img
  • CDROM drive
  • The image of the drive - /var/lib/libvirt/images/win2k3.iso (provided by the customer)

Verifying:

Status of virtual machines:
virsh list --all
running - running
stopped - stopped
name - the name of the virtual machine that is used in all the following commands as the $ NAME
Stop the virtual machine:
virsh destroy $ NAME
Running a virtual machine:
virsh start $ NAME
The resources of the virtual machine:
virsh dominfo $ NAME

On the server enabled and configured the following services:

  • Terminal Server Access
  • The server licensing terminal access
  • File Server.
